China expresses support to Venezuela amid rising US pressure
During the phone call, Venezuela’s foreign minister emphasized his country’s stance, stating that the nation and its people will “firmly safeguard the country's sovereignty and independence, resolutely defend their legitimate rights, and will not accept threats from any bullying power,” as reported by the Chinese Foreign Ministry.
China’s foreign minister responded, highlighting the longstanding strategic partnership between the two countries, saying: “China and Venezuela are strategic partners, and mutual trust and support are traditions in China-Venezuela relations.” He added that Beijing opposes “all forms of unilateral bullying and supports all countries in safeguarding their sovereignty and national dignity.”
He also affirmed that Venezuela has the right to pursue mutually beneficial cooperation with other nations independently and expressed confidence that “the international community understands and supports Venezuela's position on safeguarding its legitimate rights and interests.”
Over the past four months, US forces have increased their military presence in the Caribbean, reportedly carrying out strikes against vessels accused of drug trafficking, though no public evidence has been provided. US President Donald Trump has indicated that land strikes on Venezuelan territory could occur.
Tensions escalated last week when US forces seized a sanctioned oil tanker near Venezuela, which Caracas described as “international piracy.” Following this, Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro warned of the risk of a “new Vietnam” after Trump ordered a “total and complete blockade” on sanctioned oil tankers entering or leaving the country.
On his social media platform, Trump stated: “Venezuela is completely surrounded by the largest armada ever assembled in the history of South America,” despite the country sharing land borders with three neighboring nations.
