Sheinbaum Urges UN Action in Venezuela Tensions
During her regular press conference, Sheinbaum emphasized Mexico’s stance against external involvement and in favor of diplomacy, stating: “No to foreign interference, peaceful resolution of conflicts, and dialogue for peace. We call on the United Nations to assume its role — we have not seen it do so — to prevent any bloodshed and ensure that peaceful solutions to conflicts are always pursued. That is our position,” she said.
Her remarks followed an announcement by US President Donald Trump declaring a blockade on all oil tankers under sanctions that are entering or departing Venezuela. Trump accused the administration of Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro of channeling oil income into criminal activities, including "drug terrorism, human trafficking, murder, and kidnapping."
The Venezuelan government sharply criticized the move, calling it a breach of international law. Maduro cautioned that the decision could lead to a scenario resembling a "new Vietnam," underscoring the potential dangers of further escalation.
Although Sheinbaum refrained from openly condemning the US president, she strongly criticized the use of economic pressure as a political tool.
“The problem with blockades is that they appear to target governments, but in reality, they harm the people. This is the case with Cuba: regardless of one’s opinion about its government, a blockade hurts ordinary citizens,” she said.
Reiterating her commitment to peaceful solutions, the Mexican leader expressed readiness to act as an intermediary between Washington and Caracas. “The parties would need to approach us with a proposal. If not, mediators should be sought to help prevent conflict in the region.”
