U.S. Releases Two Russian Sailors from Marinera Oil Tanker
Maria Zakharova, the ministry's spokeswoman, confirmed the development Wednesday, stating: "Two Russian sailors have been released and are on their way home to Russia," in comments to a state news agency.
American forces intercepted the Marinera in North Atlantic waters earlier this month over alleged sanction breaches. Washington has classified the vessel as part of Venezuela's "shadow fleet"—a network of tankers covertly moving oil in defiance of US trade restrictions.
White House spokesperson Karoline Leavitt defended the operation, asserting the seizure was justified under the sanctions.
The incident marks another flashpoint in ongoing tensions between Washington and Moscow, as the US intensifies enforcement actions against vessels suspected of circumventing economic penalties targeting sanctioned nations.
